That's definitely true. Where I am, in Virginia, people are really religious and I have to hear all the time about how I'm a sinner just because I have long hair.
I hate people who use religion as an excuse to oppress those who are different from them.
I would never presume to speak for God, but I don't think that's what He wants from us.
